Repetitions, you will always see repetitions. If you get closer or just look from further away, you will notice the repeating units. Looking carefully though, each individual unit/cell becomes distinct. They bend, deform, morph to reconcile with their neighbors. I believe this is what makes life beautiful, from single-celled organisms to urban corners and landscapes. Even our characters are shaped by each other. I am fascinated by life's inherent capability of adaptation. I play with these repeating organic units in my paintings. In fact, I prefer calling them 'pasting'. Let me explain:
I am not using any conventional painting tools, or materials; I work with clay. I create three dimensional objects, take slices, and paste them together by hand. Each of these pastings takes strenuous hand work and time. This technique slowly has been evolving in my mind & hands since 2007, mostly at nights. You might say this is a very unique method, I believe it is.
Most of the time it all starts with a roll. Rolling my clay is like putting colors into a magical box and shaking. Outcome always surprises me. In general I like to play with what is given to me and make it work. Did I mention I am actually an engineer? Creating new patterns is the best part for me. I have a little recipe: Infusing some randomness as I systematically shape the clay. Nature is an expert on this, allowing uniqueness and new potentials through continuously mixing genes.
I hope you will enjoy my pastings. Don't forget to look closer, cells will surprise you with their details.
